Fifth General Meeting (Last Meeting of Fall 2013 semester)
For our final meeting of the 2013 year, Julie ran the show with information about the success of the Physics Haunted House, tying up the loose ends of reimbursement for the projects and moving forward. The next major event on the horizon is Engineering week in February and fortune favors the prepared mind. We will be sponsoring 4 teams of up to three people each for their projects for Engineering Week, up to $100 each team. This is our chance to make something creative with our knowledge and say "I built that."
For our guest speaker, we finished the semester in strong form with Dick Reim, Failure Analysis Engineer at Lockheed-Martin. He spoke to us on the practical applications of so many things we are just starting to study here at the 2-year level and how much fun we can have with science. There were screen shots from various microscopes, 3D computer renderings of how to look around inside a part so small it can fit in the tip of a pencil, and just where our technology is heading within the field. He also gave us some insight into how internships at Lockheed-Martin typically operate and what to expect in the coming years of our schooling. It was a fun presentation and very insightful.
In the closing minutes of the meeting, we had a catapult building contest. Using only popsicle sticks, adhesive, rubber bands and a plastic spoon, engineers has 1 minutes to build a functioning catapult and shoot a skittle the furthest.
While this meeting closes out the Fall semester, we look ahead to the Spring for Engineering week, tours being planned, guest speakers coming to impart more knowledge and elections for next year's officers. Lots to come. Good luck with finals and enjoy your winter break!
